Prohibitionism, or Anti-Alcoholism refers to the movement to ban the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol. It was a significant social and political movement in the United States and other countries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The goal of the prohibitionist movement was to reduce the negative social and health consequences associated with alcohol use, such as drunkenness, domestic violence, and crime.

History

Prohibitionism can be traced from Buddhism and Islam, Gautama Buddha and Muhammad abstain alcohol because they believed it intoxicated to the body. Therefore, these religions adopted anti-alcohol views. In Islam, Alcohol is considered "Haram" or a sin, and it has been banned from most Islamic (principally theocratic) countries. In the US, the Temperance or Prohibitionist movement opposed Alcohol because of its negative effects, such as addiction or drunkness. The Prohibition Party was created, which was a main party similar to Republicans and Democrats, and advocated for moderate, Christian democratic politics apart from Prohibitionism. During 1920 to 1933, Alcohol was fully banned in the US, this period being known as the Prohibition era.
