The term "terrorism" originated during the French Revolution, but its use has become widespread since the 20th century with the emergence of many terrorist groups and states, as well as groups and states accused of being terroristic, around the world.

    Types of terrorism

    Left-Wing Terrorism

Left-Wing Terrorism is a type of terrorism that is practiced by organizations with communist, socialist, left-anarchist and other left-wing ideologies. For the most part, this type of terrorism is directed against capitalist or right-wing objectives, and it was a type of terrorism that was widely practiced during the 70s and 80s. Some examples of leftist terrorist organizations are the FARC, Shining Path, Red Brigades, New People's Army and RAF. In the modern day, it's quite rare in developed countries and is far more common in the third world.

Nationalist terrorists can be either leftist (eg ETA and IRA) or rightist (eg Patrick Wood Crusius), or neither (eg Black Hand).

For example, the Medellín Cartel in Colombia or Los Zetas in Mexico were known to carry out terrorist attacks to strike fear into their enemies. In the same way, mafias and street gangs have also used terrorism for similar purposes (see for example the Capaci bombing).

Religious Terrorism refers to terrorism committed to achieve certain religious goals, or from influence by religious beliefs and/or identity. There are many examples of religious terrorist groups in history, of which Al-Qaeda and ISIS are probably most well-known.

Al-Qaeda is a pan-Islamist jihadist organization led by Sunni Islamists, which has conducted acts of terrorism against the US and its allies such as the 1998 US embassy bombings, the USS Cole bombing, and most notably, the September 11 attacks in 2001, during which a team of 11 hijackers deliberately caused 4 passenger jets to be crashed into the World Trade Center twin towers, the Pentagon, and (after a foiled hijacking) a field in Pennsylvania, all in the United States, causing a total confirmed death toll of 2,996 people.

ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) is a Salafi jihadist organization, known for its control of partial Iraqi and Syrian territory since 2014, as well as numerous acts of terrorism and human rights violations across the world, but especially in the Middle East. During its rule in Northern Iraq, it launched a genocide against Yazidis, engaged in persecution of Christians and Shia Muslims, and publicized videos of beheadings of soldiers, journalists, and aid workers. The group has also perpetrated massacres in territories outside of its control, such as the November 2015 Paris attacks, the 2024 Kerman bombings, and the Crocus City Hall attack in March 2024. During the peak of its terrorist attacks and territorial control, ISIS has caused the deaths of about 30,000 people[2].

Examples of practitioners include Ted Kaczynski and Earth First!, though the latter has not actually caused any deaths and has been labeled eco-terrorist for the significant economic damages caused by their activities. Another example of this is the École Polytechnique massacre, an anti-feminist mass shooting at the École Polytechnique de Montréal in Montréal, Quebec, in Canada, during which a lone shooter, claiming that he was "fighting feminism", killed 14 women and and injured 10 women and 4 men.

    State Terrorism & State-Sponsored Terrorism

Wikipedia: State Terrorism & State-Sponsored Terrorism

State Terrorism is when a government directly carries out an act of terrorism by itself. The most well-known example of this was during the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, when the provisional government carried out the executions by guillotine of about 40,000 people accused of treason, clericalism, pro-monarchist sentiment, and anti-revolutionary thought. Another example of this is the Imperial Japanese Army conducting a massacre of about 200,000-300,000 Chinese civilians in Nanjing in 1937 and 1938, as part of a terror campaign in their effort to capture China in World War 2. Another example of this is the Apartheid government in South Africa, which between 1979 and 1990, used a branch of the police to bomb civilian buildings and assassinate anti-Apartheid activists, in an effort to support Apartheid. A well-known fictional example of State Terrorism is the planet destroyer superweapons from Star Wars, including the Death Star built by the Galactic Empire, which destroyed the entire planets of Alderaan and Despayre, as well as the Garrison Moon of Kessel, killing over 2 billion individuals in total; as well as Starkiller Base built later by the First Order, which killed about 155 billion individuals when it destroyed the entirety of the Hosnian System.

State-Sponsored Terrorism is when a government uses a non-state terrorist group as a proxy, but does not directly carry out the acts of terrorism by itself. An example of this is the government of Pakistan, which had created and nurtured various terrorist groups to achieve its short-term foreign policy goals in the 1980s under president Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.
